Working with the staff of the Senior Center in Central Park, the HBCOA present an array of social activities and events designed to make an Active Aging lifestyle fun and enjoyable. The list is the most current events we have to offer. Check back again for more exciting events coming soon.

Surf City Gardeners

This volunteer run group meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 9 – 11am. Led by Master Gardener Chuck Nichols, monthly topics range from plants that attract butterlies to the right types of fertilizers. Gardeners of all kinds are welcome.

Wednesday Walkers, every Wedneday at 8:30am

Join the MOVEMENT at the Senior Center in Central Park.  It's as easy as one two!

STEP ONE: The program takes place every Wednesday at 8:30am. Participants will meet at the Senior Center and then walk either a 30-minuite or 1 hour loop throughout Central Park.

STEP TWO: Show up each Wednesday morning wearing comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes. Let's get healthy together!

Volunteer Appreciation Event

We couldn't have picked better volunteers and we are excited to celebrate you and all you do! This years Volunteer Appreciation Event will be on Saturday, April 15th from 12pm-2pm and all qualifying volunteers will be invited to attend. We will have entertainment, food, and an overall good time! Volunteers qualify by the number of hours they served in 2022.

Introducing the easy-to-use Palace eBook App 

Senior Center in Central Park | May 4, 1-4 PM 

Curious about eBooks and electronic audiobooks? The Huntington Beach Public Library (HBPL) is excited to announce the Palace Project App to its collection of digital resources. The Palace Project App allows HBPL cardholders to browse both the electronic media collections of both HBPL and the California State Library. This app features a much simpler user interface that is perfect for readers unfamiliar with borrowing and using electronic media. On Thursday, May 4, from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M, open office hours will be held in room EMG 2 of the Senior Center in Central Park. Members of the community will be able to schedule a 15-minute appointment where a librarian or computer coach will answer your questions about the Palace Project app, download the app to your phone or tablet, and help you check out your first eBook or audiobook. Participants should bring their Android/Apple devices to the appointment. Unfortunately, the Palace Project does not work with any model of Amazon Kindle. Alzheimer's Family Center Healthy Brain Fair, Saturday, May 6th 9:00am-12:00pm

Admission is FREE

Back by popular demand, Alzheimer’s Family Center will be offering the latest information on maintaining cognition at its Healthy Brain Fair. The half-day event will feature presentations by physicians and a registered dietitian addressing the link between hearing loss and dementia, super foods for preserving brain function, and look-alike conditions that may appear to be dementia but are not. The line-up includes:

  • “Is It Dementia or Something Else?” Aaron Ritter, M.D. - Psychiatrist from the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute at Hoag Hospital
  •  “The Link Between Hearing Loss and Dementia” - Jack Shohet, M.D. from Shohet Ear Associates
  • “Superfoods & Diet for Optimal Brain Health” - Syeda Hussaini, R.D.

The Healthy Brain Fair will also feature exhibitors providing information on caregiver resources and an opportunity drawing. Attendance is free and includes handouts to take away from each session and the opportunity to ask questions of each expert.

AGEISM Changing the Narrative, June 14th, 5:30pm Mixer/6:00pm Presentation

 Ageism affects us all regardless of age. Please join us for an engaging and honest conversation about this important topic and how we interact with it at many different levels. Our presenter is Paul Nash, PhD, instructional Associate Professor of Gerontology, University of Southern California. Dr. Nash is an expert on ageism and intersectionality, stigma, and discrimination, epitomized by his work on ageism with the World Health Organization. Dr. Nash is actively pursuing research on interventions to address both implicit and explicit ageist prejudice.

SURFS UP The Beach Boy Tribute, Saturday, June 17th, 5pm-8pm

The first concert of the season will be held on Saturday, June 17 and will feature the return of the SURFS UP Beach Boys Tribute Band. Concert is from 5-7:30 PM. $25 per ticket/HBCOA members get a 45 discount. Tickets go on sale June 1st.

Fall Rise and Walk, Saturday Saturday, November 18, 8am

Join us in March for our Fall Rise & Walk, where you will be able to complete either a one mile or three mile loop through Central Park. All ability levels are welcome to participate, so come and walk at your own pace and welcome in the wonderful Spring with good health and friends. Refreshments and snacks will be available in the lounge after the walk. Enroll online at hbsands.org, or stop by our front desk!
